Jamie's
mother, Lauren receives the divorce papers from
her father Daniel, just when Jamie
was hoping they'd get back together.

1. INT. JAMIE’S ROOM- DUSK
We pan around Jamie’s room- at her posters, jewelry, stuffed animals, magazines, a boom box, etc. We get to her bed where Jamie lays looking at pictures of her Father, pics of the family, etc.
Jamie sighs and walks away from the bed.
JAMIE
(V.O.
It’s been six
months since my Dad moved out.
I thought it was getting better- this crazy lifestyle-
first we go to Mom’s, and then we go to Dad’s, and then
back to Mom’s... I thought they were talking things out...
A very loud SCREAM is heard from downstairs.
LAUREN
(V.O.)
DIVORCE PAPERS?! He expects me to
sign for these?!
JAMIE
(V.O.)
I thought wrong...
Jamie runs out
her bedroom door.
2. INT. TOP OF STEPS- DUSK
Jamie looks down the steps to see her mother LAUREN WATTS holding the delivery boy in a strangling position. Her older brother MARK, a fourteen year old calmly pulls his mother off the delivery boy.
MARK
It’s okay, Mom. Don’t harm this nice man,
he’s just doing his job.
JAMIE
What’s going on?
3. INT. WATT’S LIVING ROOM- DUSK
MARK
(TAKING THE PAPERS)
It’s okay- we’re fine. Mom just received the
divorce papers from Dad.
The delivery boy runs away as fast as he can. Lauren plops on the sofa. Jamie runs down the steps and joins her. Marc looks through the papers as he sits on the chair opposite them.
JAMIE
I don’t understand- I thought things were
going well with Dad.
LAUREN
Sweetie- things have been great, but that’s
because we’ve been talking about the divorce.
JAMIE
So you know about this, then?
LAUREN
Yes. I just didn’t expect it to happen THIS WAY.
He could have brought the papers over himself,
or he could have at least sent flowers along with them!
MARK
Wouldn’t that be redundant?
LAUREN
Maybe- but at least it would have made me feel better...
Lauren leans her
head back and sighs in self pity. Jamie and Mark sit by their mother
helplessly.
4. INT. JAMIE’S ROOM- NIGHT
Jamie is sitting in front of her computer. She is talking to her “pals” via the computer.
Mark pounds on the door.
MARK (V.O.)
Jamie!
JAMIE
(JOKINGLY)
Who is it?
Mark opens the door.
MARK
You know who it is.
JAMIE
Oh Mark! I didn’t recognize your voice. You
sound so different- like a real man. (GIGGLES)
MARK
(ROLLING HIS EYES)
Shut up. Dad’s on the phone.
(HANDING HER PHONE)
JAMIE
(LOOKING AT PHONE)
Tell him I don’t want to talk to him.
MARK
(COVERING PHONE)
He can hear you.
JAMIE
I don’t care- I don’t want to talk right now.
MARK
Don’t be so immature.
(WAITS FOR HER RESPONSE)
Jamie goes back to her computer. Mark lets out a big sigh.
MARK
(CONT.)
Dad,
she doesn’t want to talk right now...
yeah, yeah.
They’re both taking it hard...
I know, Dad...
I know.
Mark closes the door behind him. Jamie stops typing on her computer and crosses to her bed. She falls to bed and lies on her back. She glances at a photo of her and her father displayed close to her bed.
An instant message comes on the PC. It is from “KING MOTOR MOUTH of Yang”. He writes:
KING MM
Oh fair queen
of Ying, this is your King
of Yang.
I hear your in the slump of gloom
right now...
Jamie runs over to the computer.
JAMIE (V.O.)
My king has come to my rescue. King
Motor Mouth. He always seems to know
my moods. I don’t understand how- though
I have a feeling he is someone I know
quite well.
Jamie writes:
JAMIE (V.O.)
Hi my King.
Yes- I’m very depressed. My mom
just received
the divorce papers from my dad.
They’re actually
getting divorced.
The King writes:
KING MM (V.O.)
Ah- the day has
finally arrived. And it is
hard. But
as all things- it will soon pass
and you’ll
feel great again. You still have a
mother and a
father.
Jamie writes:
The King writes:
KING
MM (V.O.)
Divorce simply means that they have given up
each other as
a couple- but not you and your
brother.
Now they are free to pursue other companions.
Jamie writes:
JAMIE
(V.O.)
Other companions? That’s so gross!!
The King writes:
KING
MM (V.O.)
You see, once you reach their age, companionship
becomes very
important. The wrong companion
can make life
very difficult. But the right
companion makes
life so much more special.
Do you have a
boyfriend yet?
Jamie giggles.
JAMIE
(V.O.)
Well it’s definitely not Mark. He knows
all about the boys in my life.
Jamie writes:
JAMIE (V.O.)
No. I have
a crush on someone though.
He is so cute.
His name is Toby and he’s
in my class.
Sometimes we have to drive
to school together-
when I’m at my dad’s.
The King writes:
KING
MM (V.O.)
Ah...Your parents separation has helped you
in at least one way.
Jamie ponders
the King’s statement. Jamie writes:
JAMIE
(V.O.)
How do you mean?
Lauren knocks on the door.
LAUREN
Jamie, can I come in?
JAMIE
Sure, Mom. It’s open.
The King writes:
Lauren sits on the bed. She glances at the picture of Daniel and Jamie.
LAUREN
Who are you talking to?
JAMIE
The King of Yang.
Jamie types:
JAMIE (V.O.)
Yes, I guess you’re right again! You always
seem to know
all the answers, my King.
Mom just walked
in so I gotta go. Talk to you tomorrow?
LAUREN
(LAUGHING)
You still talk
to him?
The King types:
KING
MM (V.O.)
Sure, my Queen. Looking forward to it.
Goodnight, now.
JAMIE
Of course- once a friend- always a friend.
LAUREN
Did you ever figure out who he really is?
JAMIE
No.
(TURNING AROUND TO LAUREN)
Why? Do you know who he is?
LAUREN
No. I was just wondering. You’ve chatted
with him ever since you got THAT computer.
JAMIE
I know. And he always seems to know what’s
up with me.
LAUREN
Do you think it’s one of your friends from school?
JAMIE
It could be. But he seems so much smarter than
any of them...
LAUREN
Anyway, your dad’s downstairs. He was worried
about you so he came over.
JAMIE
Yeah, I was kind of hard on him.
Jamie and Lauren stand up.
JAMIE
(CONT.)
But he deserved it- that was a horrible thing to do.
LAUREN
Jamie, it was going to happen sooner or later.
I just didn’t expect it today.
JAMIE
But Mom, I’m worried about you!
LAUREN
(HUGGING JAMIE)
I’m fine, Sweet heart! Now let’s go downstairs
and see the boys before they send out a
search party for us.
Jamie and Lauren walk out of the room. Lauren turns back when she hears a song coming from the computer. It sounds familiar to her.
LAUREN
Where’d you get that song from?
JAMIE
Oh- it’s just some old song the King of Yang
sent to me.
Lauren slowly
smiles.
5. INT. TOP OF STAIR CASE- NIGHT
Jamie stands at the top of the stair case. She looks down to see her father DANIEL at the bottom of the stairs talking to FREDDIE Lauren’s next door neighbor. They look up to see Jamie.
FREDDIE
(WITH CIGAR IN MOUTH)
Hey there, Dumpling. Heard you’re feeling down.
JAMIE
(WALKING DOWN THE STEPS)
Please
don’t smoke inside. It’s your horrible
habit-
not mine.
FREDDIE
(STEPPING OUTSIDE)
I see your mother has taught you well! Hope
you feel better.
6. LIVING ROOM- NIGHT
DANIEL
(WAITING FOR JAMIE TO NOTICE)
Jamie?
Jamie hesitantly hugs her father. Lauren passes them and goes into the kitchen where Mark can be seen doing the dishes. They both peak into the living room every once in a while.
Jamie and Daniel sit on the sofa together.
JAMIE
I’m sorry Dad. I’m sorry I was so mean.
DANIEL
That’s okay- Sweetie. It’s natural to be upset.
You do have to realize that I’m not divorcing
you or Mark- I would never do THAT. Though
your mother and I have chosen to live in separate
places we will ALWAYS be your parents-
JAMIE
I know- Dad. The King of Yang explained all
this to me already.
DANIEL
Who’s the King of Yang? A new baby sitter?
JAMIE
NO, I don’t need
baby sitters anymore!
In fact I haven’t
had a sitter
since you moved
out.
DANIEL
And why not? Your Mother’s lack of a social life?
LAUREN
(PEAKING IN FROM KITCHEN)
I heard that! I have a very busy social life-
thank you very much.
JAMIE
Mark watches
me now.
DANIEL
So who’s this
King of Yang, then?
Lauren peaks in and smiles at Daniel. He smiles back at her.
JAMIE
The King of Yang
is my computer buddy. He sends me instant
messages over
the internet. Don’t you remember him?
Remember you
told him to stop bothering me once? You thought
he was a weirdo
or something.
DANIEL
Oh- yeah. I remember him now. I can’t believe
he still chats with you.
(DANIEL SLIGHTLY SMILES)
JAMIE
(V.O.)
Hmm. Is he just acting or did he really forget
about the King. I wonder...It could still be Dad.
JAMIE
Well he does. In fact he’s one of
my best friends
now.
DANIEL
Have you ever met this King Yang?
JAMIE
Of course not. His name is King Motor Mouth.
Not King Yang. He’s the King of Yang.
DANIEL
I’m sorry, Sweetie. King Motor Mouth, huh?
JAMIE
(V.O.)
Motor Mouth. It’s obviously some one who
admits that they talk a lot...
DANIEL
Well, Sweetie, I have to get going. I just wanted
to make sure you were okay.
JAMIE
Thanks, Dad.
(STANDING UP)
I’m okay. It’s just that I miss living with you.
I miss us all being in one place- like a real family.
DANIEL
I miss that too,
but it just didn’t work out between your
mother and me.
Think of the bright side- now you get two of
everything: two
places to live, two bedrooms, two TV’s-
JAMIE
Two computers?
DANIEL
I’m working on
that one.
Lauren and Marc walk back into the living room.
LAUREN
You’re leaving already?
DANIEL
Yeah- I have some work to do at home.
LAUREN
(MUMBLING)
Yeah- what’s new.
MARK
(NUDGING HER)
Mom, be nice.
So Dad, Friday, same time as usual?
DANIEL
Same time, same
bat channel.
(DANIEL HUGS MARK)
I’ll pick you up after practice.
Mark runs up the stairs.
MARK
Okay, Dad, see ya Friday.
Lauren stands by the door as Daniel and Jamie pass by.
DANIEL
(PAUSING)
Good night, Lauren.
(DANIEL GENTLY KISSES LAUREN)
Jamie waits on the front porch.
Daniel walks outside. Lauren stands by the front door.
LAUREN
Good night...
7. EXT. STEPS OF THE FRONT PORCH- NIGHT
Jamie stands on the front steps. Daniel joins her. Freddie is sitting on his steps next door smoking his cigar.
JAMIE
Dad, could I stay all weekend at your house this
time? Maybe we can car pool on Monday morning
with Toby and Raymond?
DANIEL
Sure! That
sounds great. I’ll make the
arrangements
this week. Anything special you want
to do this weekend?
JAMIE
I’d like to go
to the mall. Buy a new outfit?
DANIEL
Sure- my little
fashion plate. The mall it is.
Are you sure
you’re going to be okay?
JAMIE
Yes- Dad.
Now go! I have to talk to Mr. Freddie
about something.
DANIEL
(HUGS JAIMIE)
Be good for your
Mom, and I’ll see you Friday.
JAMIE
Okay Dad!
Goodnight.
DANIEL
(WALKING
TO CAR)
Goodnight!
Good night Fred.
FREDDIE
Good night,
Dan.
Jamie sits on her steps and looks at Freddie. Fred smiles at Jamie and enjoys his cigar.
JAMIE
How many cigars do you smoke in one day?
FREDDIE
Who’s counting?
JAMIE
Your lungs.
They wave as Daniel drives away.
FREDDIE
You know, you’re pretty smart for a kid. I
thought about having kids once. But then I
realized it was close to impossible.
JAMIE
Why?
FREDDIE
I’m a man.
JAMIE
Haha! Why didn’t you and your wife ever
have any kids?
FREDDIE
I guess we just never found the time...Besides-
cars are a lot easier. Their much more obedient.
And the sounds of their motors when they’re
on the road is so beautiful...
JAMIE (V.O.)
(WATCHING HIM SPEAK)
The sounds of their motors? Motor, motor mouth?
like in King Motor Mouth?
JAMIE
(CONT.)
So... Freddie, do you own a computer?
FREDDIE
(PROUDLY)
Sure do! A beautiful TSR80! Why?
JAMIE
Just wondering...
JAMIE (V.O.)
Nope, Freddie
is definitely not the King of Yang.
Jamie lets out
a sigh of frustration as Freddie continues to talk about his cars.
The camera angle pulls back on the two of them and fades out.
8. EXT. FRONT PORCH- NEXT MORNING
A delivery van pulls up in front of the house. It has a sign on it reading, “Flowers and Divorces, Unlimited” The same delivery boy comes up to the front door carrying a bouquet of flowers. He knocks on the door.
Lauren comes to the door.
LAUREN
May I help you?
She smiles when she sees the flowers.
DELIVERY
BOY
I have a delivery for Mrs. Lauren Watts.
(RECOGNIZES LAUREN)
You again? Please! Don’t choke me!
He throws the pad to her and puts the flowers beside it. She lifts the pad up and signs it.
LAUREN
(HANDING BACK THE PAD)
Here you go!
DELIVERY
BOY
Don’t come near me!! Jus...Just throw it to me.
The delivery boy grabs the pad and runs away as fast as he can. He runs so fast he forgets the van.
Lauren picks up the flowers.
LAUREN
Hey, young man! You forget your
(HOLDING A PEN
IN THE AIR. SHE SEES THE VAN)
...van.
Lauren looks at the flowers and smiles. She reads the note- realizes they’re from her kids.
Freddie comes out of his house with a huge smile.
LAUREN
Hey Fred, see what the kids bought me?
FREDDIE
Beautiful! Just beautiful...
Freddie walks over to the van and admires it..
Lauren shakes
her head and smiles.
FADE OUT
