1. EXT.
THE GREENFIELD SCHOOL- morning
Daniel Watts
pulls up to the school in his green Mustang convertible. Jamie,
RAYMOND JEFFRIES, and TOBY JONES are in the back. Marc is in the
front. When he pulls up to the school the kids hesitate.
Jamie is freezing- her head covered by her coat. The boys in the
back seat are wearing sunglasses and trying to look cool. As the
car comes to a stop- the boys hesitate- Jamie comes out of hiding.
JAMIE
Are we there yet?
DANIEL
We’re here Sweetie. I hope you weren’t too cold.
MARC
(GETTING OUT OF CAR)
Come on kids- you don’t want to be late. Scadoodle!
Get out! Get to School!
TOBY
Sorry- we’re not fast enough for you Marc- we just love-
Jamie looks
all dopey-eyed at him.
MARC
My sister?
JAMIE
(PUSHES MARC)
Shut up.
TOBY
Your fathers car! It’s so COOL!
(GETTING OUT)
RAYMOND
And your sisters company. She’s so sweet.
(WHISPERS)
when she’s in LOVE.
JAMIE
(EMBARRASSED)
ENOUGH Raymond.
(HUGS HER FATHER)
Thanks Dad. I’ll see you Friday.
DANIEL
Okay Sweetie.
And tell Aunt Emily I said “Hello”.
JAMIE
Oh my god!! I forgot they’re coming back this week!
I can’t wait to see them!
The
school bell rings. Toby, and Raymond run for the front doors.
PRINCIPAL
HENRY CRAFT can be seen walking out the front door. As he sees the
kids running towards him- he crosses his arms and glares at them.
TOBY
Thanks Mr. Watts!
RAYMOND
Come on Jamie! See ya Mr. Watts
MARC
See you, Dad.
JAMIE
I’m coming! I’m coming!
The kids
pass by the Principal.
MARC
Good morning Mr. Craft!
MR. CRAFT
YOU’RE LATE AGAIN!
JAMIE
We’re sorry, Mr. Craft- you can blame it on my Dad’s
stupid car! The boys act like it’s going extinct!!
 
MR. CRAFT
(HOLDING THE DOOR)
Well run along in and get to class.
The kids
run into the school.
MR. CRAFT
A mustang convertible going extinct? NEVER!!
Dan can
be seen standing by his car. Mr. Craft walks over to him.
DANIEL
Good morning, Henry.
MR. CRAFT
Good morning, Dan. Your kids are late again...
DANIEL
I’m sorry- we just got a late start. And traffic is so bad in the
city.
I’m just
not used to driving the car pool yet.
MR. CRAFT
Yeah- I’ve heard them all- Dan. You wouldn’t happen
to have some smokes, would ya?
DANIEL
No- sorry- I don’t smoke.
MR. CRAFT
Well there’s a farm store down the road a few miles.
Is there any way you could give me a ride there?
DANIEL
Ah- sure, I guess I could. I don’t have to go to work
for another two hours...
MR. CRAFT
GREAT!
The guys
get into the car. Dan is about to put the top up. Mr. Craft
stops him.
MR. CRAFT
Oh- can you leave the top down? I like
the fresh air.
DANIEL
I’m warning you- it’s cold.
MR. CRAFT
(PULLING OUT SOME BLACK SUNGLASSES)
That’s okay- I’m hot blooded.
Mr. Craft
puts on his sunglasses, and Daniel puts his on. The men drive away.
As they
drive away- Sophie rushes out with some papers.
MS. SOPHIE
Mr. Craft? Oh Mr. Craft?! Could you sign these papers?
2.
INT. MIDDLE SCHOOL HALLWAY
Jamie is
standing by her locker with her friend APRIL KARLOW. They are giggling
as they read a card. They glance at the two boys standing a few feet
away, MAX SWEENEY, and TYLER HANSON.
JAMIE
I can’t believe he sent that to you!
APRIL
I know! It’s so sweet, but it’s way too early!
I mean it’s not even Christmas yet!
The girls
open the card and giggle.
APRIL
Do you think I should thank him?
JAMIE
Sure! It’s the thought that counts.
The girls
look over at the boys. The boys notice. Jamie pushes April
towards them. They walk over.
 
APRIL (BASHFULLY)
Max, I got your card. You know- the one
you stuck in my locker.
MAX (surprised)
What card?
APRIL
You know,
the Valentines card?
(SHOWS
IT TO HIM)
Max looks
the card over. Tyler breaks out laughing. He backs away.
A few other kids
start laughing.
MAX (HANDING
IT BACK)
I’m sorry, April. I didn’t send this to you.
(LOOKING OVER AT TYLER)
Do you know anything about this?
TYLER
(TRYING TO HOLD IN HIS AMUSEMENT)
No. I don’t. Who’d send a Valentines Card this
early anyway?
MAX
Some practical joker, maybe?
APRIL
That’s okay- I knew it was a joke. It’s funny too! Haha.
JAMIE
It’s so funny we forgot to laugh.
Jamie and
April walk away. As Jamie passes Tyler, she pushes him out of her
way.
Max watches
the girls helplessly.
MAX
I’m sorry I didn’t send it to you. I will
send you one on Valentines though!
TYLER (MAKING FUN OF MAX)
“I will send one to you on Valentines”
MAX
Shutup!! I know you had something to do with that.
The boys
begin to rough house.
Jamie and
April have walked down the hall. They stand by Jamie’s locker.
Jamie opens
her locker
and grabs some books while April waits. She looks down the hall to
see the
boys rough
housing.
APRIL
I knew it was a joke.
JAMIE
Oh, me too. At least he knows you exist.
Jamie spots
Toby down the hall. Toby walks towards her.
APRIL
Toby knows you exist! He shares a carpool
with you!
JAMIE
So? He still doesn’t talk to me. He talks to
Raymond or my Dad.
APRIL
Well I don’t blame him- your Dad’s so cute!
JAMIE
(ROLLING HER EYES)
April- you’re talking about my Dad.
Toby approaches
Jamie. She is surprised.
TOBY
Hey Jamie!
JAMIE
Hi!
TOBY
This morning, your father mentioned that your
Aunt Emily was coming to town this week...
JAMIE
Yeah...
TOBY
Is she married to ASHER? ASHER DANIELS? The
guy from 1313?
JAMIE
Yes, she is. They’ve been married for nine years, I think.
TOBY
That’s so cool! Do you get to go to concerts?
You know 1313 is huge! They’re going to be as
big as the Rolling Stones!
JAMIE
Thanks! We hope! I never see my Aunt anymore-
or my cousin Zack. They travel all over the country now.
April stands
beside Jamie smiling. Jamie every once in a while nudges her to move
away.
TOBY
So is there anyway you could get some autographs?
JAMIE
For you, sure!
TOBY
And one for Sam?
JAMIE
Sam?
April points
at a girl standing a few feet away wearing a cheerleading outfit.
SAMANTHA
JENKINS waves to Jamie. Jamie looks over at her in dread.
JAMIE (V.O.)
(WAVING POLITELY)
Samantha Jenkins! He wants me to get an
autograph for my biggest enemy!! I hate
cheerleaders ...
3. INT.
JAMIE’S ROOM- NIGHT
Jamie sits
at her computer. She chats with the King of yang.
Jamie writes:
JAMIE
I can’t believe he did that! I feel so horrible!
I can’t believe he’s using me to impress her!
The King
writes:
KING OF
YANG
Jamie,
this young man isn’t doing anything wrong
in getting
an autograph for someone he knows. Maybe
you should
tell him how you feel.
Jamie writes:
JAMIE
Are you crazy?! I can’t do that!!
The king
writes:
KING OF YANG
Maybe you could ask him to have lunch with you.
Or meet you at the mall.
Jamie writes:
JAMIE
No way! You really think I should?
The king
writes:
KING OF YANG
Well, I think you should do something to show
him how you feel. Then, if he doesn’t appreciate you
maybe he’s not worth your time.
Jamie writes:
JAMIE
You’re
right. But I don’t think I’m ready to tell Toby how I feel.
Do
you think I should still get them the autographs?
The King
writes:
King
of Yang
Why not? It will make you look good. Besides
it will
give you an excuse to talk to Toby about
something
besides the carpool.
There is
a quiet knock on the door. Jamie barely hears it.
JAMIE
Is someone there? Who is it?
Little ZACHARY
DANIELS, Jamie’s cousin walks in.
ZACK (WALKING OVER TO HER)
Aunt Lauren said you were in a rotten mood.
JAMIE (GRABBING HIM)
I’m in a better mood now that you’re around!
Oh Zacky I’m so happy to see you!!
ZACK
I’m so glad to be back in town! What are you doing?
Jamie starts
to write:
JAMIE
You are
so right, King! Toby seems to love Uncle Asher!
I have
enough bragging material for the
next millenium!
(TO ZACK)
I’m writing
to my computer buddy, the King
of Yang.
The King
writes:
King of Yang
I wouldn’t over do it. Just enough to get acquainted.
Then maybe
try to see if he has any hobbies.
Maybe you
two have some things in common.
ZACK
Wow!
Did he just send that to you? So you’re actually
talking
to a king! Wow! I can’t wait to tell Mom!
Jamie writes:
JAMIE
Good idea! My little cousin Zack just
walked in so I have to go. Speak to you
tomorrow?
The King
writes:
THE KING OF YANG
Looking forward to it. Tell little Zack
the King says “hello” Good night now.
JAMIE
The King says ‘hello’.
ZACK
Wow! Is he a real king?
JAMIE
I doubt it. I think it’s just his computer name.
I’m the Queen of Yin. We rule the internet!
ZACK
Have you ever met him?
JAMIE
I don’t
know. I can’t quite figure it out. Our computer names
come from
the same thing, the Yin-Yang symbol. It’s either
someone
I know real well, or he just happens to
use a name
similar to mine.
ZACK
Do you
think it’s Mark?
JAMIE
Well, I
think he’s too obvious. Besides, he
never uses
his computer. Every time I go into his room,
he’s reading
comic books or magazines.
ZACK
I know!
I love his Spiderman collection!
JAMIE
Yeah, you
would. Come on, let’s go downstairs and see
everyone.
INT. THE
WATT’S DINING ROOM- NIGHT
Zack and
Jamie walk through the living room to the dining room where Lauren and
EMMY, Lauren’s younger sister are sitting making necklaces. Marc
sits at the end of the table doing his homework.
Emmy runs
over to Jamie when she sees her.
EMMY
Jamie you are getting more and more
beautiful every time I see you!
LAUREN
Don’t spoil her- please.
EMMY
What? I can compliment my favorite niece.
ZACK
Mom! Jamie speaks to a King over the internet!
EMMY
That’s GREAT! Is he really a KING?
LAUREN
No- he’s an internet pen pal.
JAMIE
No- he’s not- we don’t write letters. We talk.
LAUREN
You mean you type. You don’t talk-
EMMY
Do we know who this person is?
JAMIE
No- I’ve never met him. I don’t think.
Emmy looks
at Lauren. She tries to nod “yes” but Jamie is looking at her.
JAMIE
MOM? Do we?
LAUREN
No! Of course we don’t. I don’t know who he is-
maybe your father does.
(WHISPERS)
later.
MARC
We heard that.
JAMIE
Mom- if you know who the King is- then
you better spill the beans.
LAUREN
I don’t know who he is- don’t use that tone of
voice with
me, young lady. I can’t help it that you’re still in a rotten
mood.
JAMIE
Especially since you keep reminding me that I am.
EMMY
Boy! This sure is sounding familiar!
LAUREN
Well it was stupid of you to promise something
without asking first.
JAMIE
Mom! Would you leave me alone about it?
EMMY
What’s going on here?
MARC
Jamie promised Toby and his girlfriend that she could
get a few autographs from Asher.
JAMIE
She’s NOT his girlfriend!
MARC
Jamie’s jealous.
JAMIE
I am NOT!
EMMY
So you need some autographs? No problem!
I’ll call Asher up tonight and get him to send them out
tomorrow morning.
LAUREN
Are you sure? If it’s a problem-
EMMY
No- problem at all! Asher signs zillions of
autographs. I’m sure he’d love to sign a few for
family members.
JAMIE
Thank you so much Aunt Emmie!!
EMMY
Is that what was making you feel so bad?
JAMIE
It’s a little more than that...
EMMY
Let me guess- it has to do with a boy.
JAMIE
Toby’s in my car pool...
EMMY
And you like this Toby?
JAMIE
Yeah- he’s so cute.
ZACK
(JUMPS AROUND)
Jamie’s got a boyfriend! Jamie’s got a boyfriend.
JAMIE
He’s not boyfriend!
EMMIE
He likes this other girl?
JAMIE
He’s trying to use ME to impress HER.
EMMIE
I see... (SMILES AT LAUREN)
LAUREN
I recognize that look. It’s going to be good!
MARC
You could spell her name wrong!
ZACK
You could drop the autograph in mud and then jump
on it seventeen times!
(ACTS IT OUT)
MARC
You could dip it in itching powder!
ZACK
NO! You could dip it in dog-
EMMIE
ENOUGH ZACK! That’s Rude!
ZACK
But Mom- Jamie likes this guy.
EMMIE
Jamie, what’s her name again?
JAMIE
Samantha. Samantha Jenkins.
LAUREN
Oh yeah- that’s Peter and Karen’s daughter.
Karen is on the school board, and Peter Jenkins
is a doctor at Hopkins- a Surgeon I think.
JAMIE
Mom always seems to know these things.
(TO MARC)
EMMIE
Marc, pass me a pen and paper.
LAUREN
What are you up to, Emily?
EMMY
Okay- Toby...
(WRITING AND SPEAKING)
Dear Toby, so you’re a friend of Jamie’s?
You’re very lucky- she’s so pretty. She’s my
favorite
little niece.
MARC
HEY!!
EMMY
I said
“niece”! You’re not a girl, are you?
MARC
No.
EMMY
“Please
take care of her for me. Your pal, ASHER”
So, what
do you think?!
JAMIE
That’s
GREAT!! Now, what about Samantha?
EMMIE
Samantha..Sam...
(STARTS
TO WRITE)
“Dear Sam...Sam
is such an All-American kind of
name.”
(TO JAMIE) She’s a cheerleader?
JAMIE
Yes- the
head of them.
EMMIE
(WRITING)
“You must
be a great athlete- a football player
or something?
Good luck and make a touch down for me!
Your Bud,
Asher.” Well? What do you think?
JAMIE
I think
you’re my favorite AUNT!!!
INT.
MIDDLE SCHOOL LOCKER AREA- DAY
April runs
over to Jamie who is standing by her locker.
APRIL
I got another card again.
JAMIE
I’m going to KILL TYLER!
APRIL
No- I think it’s for real. It’s a Christmas
card with a really sweet poem.
JAMIE
(LOOKING AT CARD)
This is probably real- Tyler couldn’t be this GOOD.
Max walks
over to the girls.
MAX
April- did you get my card?
APRIL
You really did send this to me?
MAX
Of course- it’s the Christmas season- and
you’ll on my Christmas card list.
APRIL
Oh- Max- this is so sweet. Did you really write this?
April walks
a few feet away to talk to Max. Jamie leans on her locker.
JAMIE
Oh brother...
Jamie looks
a few feet down the hall to see Samantha and Toby walking towards her.
Samantha
is whining. She walks over to Jamie holding the autograph.
SAMANTHA
(THROWING AUTOGRAPH AT JAMIE)
Jamie- I thought you knew this autograph
was for ME. THIS is written to a BOY-
In case you’re confused- I am a GIRL. I don’t
want this stupid thing, anyway. You’re
Uncle’s band is LAME- and SO ARE YOU.
Toby- I’ll see you in my office- please.
Samantha
storms away. April and Max stand with Jamie stunned.
MAX
She has an office?
APRIL
I think she means the gym.
JAMIE
Well- there goes my cheerleading career.
MAX
Why would you want to be a cheerleader anyway.
TOBY
I’m sorry about Sam. She didn’t mean it.
JAMIE
Of course she does. I should have told my Aunt
it was for “Samantha”.
TOBY
Well- I LOVED my autograph! You have a really
cool Uncle!!
JAMIE
Thanks! All my relatives are COOL.
Tyler comes
running up the hall towards Max. As he gets up to the group he passes
very close to Jamie. Toby immediately blocks Tyler from getting anywhere
near Jamie. Everyone laughs.
JAMIE
(COLLECTING HERSELF)
What was THAT about?
TOBY
Oh- I’m sorry. It’s just that your Uncle told me
to protect you.
(SHOWING THE AUTOGRAPH)
See, here?
APRIL
Wow! You have a new body guard!
JAMIE
Wow! That’s so sweet, Toby. Thanks! But-
No thanks. See- I can take care of myself. Besides-
Samantha is waiting for you in her office.
Come on, April. Let’s go to the library and study.
Toby, Tyler
and Max stand as they watch the girls walk away.
Jamie and
April walk a few feet and then turn around.
APRIL
Max- aren’t you coming?
Max looks
at his friends. Then smiles and runs over to the girls.
Jamie, April,
and Max pass the camera and keep walking. Tyler starts to tease Toby
who stands there looking down at his autograph.
Close-up
on Jamie as she turns around and sees him still standing there. Jamie
smiles to herself.
All of the
sudden Principal Craft comes marching up the steps towards Jamie pulling
Mark behind him.
PRINCIPAL CRAFT
(YELLING AS HE PASSES JAMIE)
We don’t allow behavior like that in this school, Boy.
You are in deep, deep trouble!! You are going to get
it THIS time. You are in so much trouble.
MARC
But I didn’t do it! Jamie! Tell him I didn’t do it!!
Sophie comes
running after them with an arm full of papers. When she sees
Jamie she rushes over to her.
SOPHIE
Your brother is in BIG trouble, Jamie. I’ve never seen
Mr. Craft this mad.
JAMIE
What did he do?
SOPHIE
(WHISPERING)
It’s what he DIDN’T do.

on Sophie being “hush-hush”.
