Interview with Mia Catalfamo
| Before visiting the set, who was your favorite character(s)?:
Well, I really enjoyed Joshua Jackson's character of Pacey, and Michelle Williams' character of Jen. Pacey was and still is my all-time favorite character not only because he is played by the notably crazy Joshua Jackson but because Pacey is the comic relief for the otherwise intense scenes. Whether it's just a facial expression or a few silly lines, Josh really makes Pacey lovable. And in my opinion, Michelle Williams really brought a lot of emotions to her role and she still does today. In the earlier years of the show when Jen was going through very tough times in her life, Michelle somehow was so good at portraying the pain that Jen had to deal with, that I found myself really truly liking Jen Lindley, even though she was known as the "blonde bombshell" who disrupted the on-again, off-again romance between Dawson and Joey. After visiting the sets- who is your favorite character(s)?: I still very much like Pacey and Jen, and I think I always will. I don't hate the other characters, I just dislike them from time to time. When Jack [Kerr Smith] was going through his whole confusing time of not knowing whether he was truly gay, I felt his pain. I couldn't relate to it but like Michelle, Kerr really brought so much to his character that it was really difficult to remember it was all make believe and that when "cut!" was called, Kerr was Kerr and not Jack. Each actor and even the crew were just extremely nice and very welcoming, especially when I had VIP passes. Time and time again, I've heard numerous stories from various people who have complained that certain actors on the show are not very pleasurable to be around but each time I have visited the production of 'Dawson's Creek', I wasn't disappointed. I had wonderful run-ins with everyone and if anything, meeting them and having the opportunity to hang around on sets with them made me see them in a much better light, and I can only wish that more people would have that chance. Then maybe they will realize that, like us, actors and actresses also have bad days and may not be in the best of moods all the time. I think I've grown to be more open-minded about these things. Now that you've visited the sets, how do your experiences influence
watching 'DC' now?:
Any fun stories about the cast members? For instance, on 'The Wire' set, Clark Johnson, the director, calls me and Ellen, "The two E's".: Like I said, each actor was wonderfully friendly and I have no complaints about any of them. I think everyone who knows Josh Jackson or who has met him can agree with me when I say that he is the cast clown. He seems like he doesn't hold anything back...he's very free spirited and very sociable, plus, I got to see one of his infamous moonings, which was quite hilarious. Katie Holmes is very tall and very pretty but extremely shy, which I guess in understandable since so many people scream for her all the time and James is a bit quiet...actually, he is much more calm compared to Josh's wildness and people take that as him being stand-offish or arrogant, when, from my perspective, I think James is more serious about his work. I was very surprised at how tiny Michelle Williams was. She is just so sweet and I was very excited to meet her. She was the only cast member who I hadn't gotten to meet on my previous trips to Wilmington but I met her around 2 am on my last night in town under a catering tent and she was just so down-to-earth and so pretty. I was happy to see that someone from the cast was as short as I am.
What's your favorite picture out of your picture collection?: Of course I love the pictures of me with the cast, preferably the ones with Joshua Jackson but I'm a big fan of the scenic pictures...ones of the creek and of the real houses used on the show, plus I love the pictures of downtown by the Cape Fear River. The town itself is so picturesque and it's so beautiful, especially when the sun reflects off of the water.
After observing the filming, and besides the actors, what department did you enjoy the most or learn from by observing? For example, watching the grips set up the lights, etc.: The whole directing part was really interesting to watch because I think that would be a field I wouldn't mind going into one day. Being able to create a scene and capturing it through a camera lens is something that I always wanted to do. Right now I am obviously no where near being the next Spielberg or Ron Howard because I have absolutely no knowledge about the department whatsoever but just sitting there and watching the director block scenes somehow got a lot of my attention. Any general "inside" scoops about 'DC'? : While I was there, I found out many spoilers for upcoming episodes but those are clearly unimportant now seeing is how everything has already aired. At the time, everyone was skeptical on whether or not season five would come into play so it was sort of a debate on that but since I haven't been down there since last March, I'm really not in the know about anything. How does your 'Young Americans' experiences compare to your 'DC' experiences?: The differences between my 'Young Americans' and 'Dawson's Creek' experiences are that each day in the summer when 'Young Americans' was filming in Havre De Grace, I would visit the sets and locations all the time. I actually went there so often that the actors and crew began to recognize me and eventually knew my name, which was really kind of cool. 'Dawson's Creek' films so far away...about 8 hours to be exact...and I couldn't just hop in the car and go watch production whenever I was bored like I could with 'Young Americans'. Which 'YA' actor did you like meeting the most?: Oh I can't pick just one! At first, I was anticipating meeting Rodney Scott [Will Krudski] because he was in a few 'Dawson's Creek' episodes before he transferred to 'Young Americans' but as I hung out on the sets more often, I began to really like everyone. The actors were virtually unheard of, which in a way was a good thing because no one stormed the sets and freaked out about meeting them like I've witnessed happen on the 'Dawson's Creek' sets. They all became like my friends since I spent so much time up there and when the first episode finally aired, it was kind of weird because it was sort of like watching a friend on a television show.
Are you looking forward to working with the 'Jamie's Way' cast, and why?: Absolutely! I am pumped and ready to begin working with you and the cast of 'Jamie's Way.' I can't wait to finally begin filming and I know that I will most likely be hanging around the sets, even when I am not in a scene, just to watch the whole process. I know that the cast is a great group of people and I am very much looking forward to being accepted into your little family and I can only hope to please you guys. We'll have some fun times! Any other general comments? About DC, YA, or JW: I just would like to thank you and the actors for welcoming me to the
cast and I hope that 'Jamie's Way' will take off to new levels in the near
future. The Internet is so powerful and the idea of a webdrama is
so unique that I am sure the show will be successful and will be a big
hit for the current and upcoming teen generations.
